Storytelling Apprenticeship

"I heard this story from my grand-mother, who heard it from her grand-mother. And now I’m telling it to you..."

Anyone interested in joining the apprenticeship should contact Janis Mackay on growingstory@mail.com

People find their way into storytelling in strange, wonderful and often circuitous routes. The journey to becoming a ‘storyteller’ is different for each person, and in a way that is part of the rich and unique character of storytelling.

There is no doubt that times are changing and whereas in the past many people were lucky enough to learn their stories at the flickering and peaty fireside of their ancestors, most of us nowadays are more likely to learn our stories from books or in contemporary storytelling gatherings. An apprenticeship in days past would have begun in early childhood — by hearing stories and ballads until they became a part of you, just like the great storyteller Duncan Williamson, who learnt his art by listening to stories and songs by the campfire from the day he was born.

So how can those of us who didn’t learn stories this way learn to become storytellers? What is a storyteller’s apprenticeship? What do we need to do in order to stoke the fire and rekindle the culture of storytelling, and be the one who, with confidence, imagination and a sense of wonder, holds an audience and speaks the words… once upon a time

The Storytelling Apprenticeship is offered by the Scottish Storytelling Centre, through TRACS – Traditional Arts & Culture Scotland. Apprentice Storytellers are working towards joining the Directory of Professional Storytellers in Scotland. An apprenticeship could last up to three years, during which time the apprentice is learning the art and craft of storytelling; taking courses, shadowing storytellers, being mentored, seeking varied opportunities to tell stories and joining in with the apprentice training days, which are held three times annually at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

These training days are offered free of charge to Forum Members to support their development, and also to foster a sense of community.
