Aneta Dortová is a native of Pilsen, the Czech Republic. After her first exposure to Irish music she began to play it herself, picking up the whistle and flute. Not long after she was a regular there in the Irish community, traveling the country for workshops, festivals, and sessions. Being immersed the music naturally lead to an interest in the traditional dancing. In 2013 she began taking Irish step dance classes, and shortly thereafter Sean-Nós classes from Markéta Utišilová and Gerard Butler. In 2015 Aneta moved to Galway city, Ireland, where Irish traditional culture is an active part of everyday life. She’s a regular competitor at the An tOireachtas, and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann events. She runs weekly traditional Sean-Nós classes, is a busker in the city centre with multiple ensembles, and is a regular in many of the local music sessions. Her personal dance style is mainly a blend of Sean-Nós and Irish dance steps, but bits from other percussive dance traditions are mixed in as well. In performance settings, she improvises rather than using set steps. For her, listening to the other musicians, dancing the tune while blending in and becoming another “instrument” is the most important thing.
