Marita Lück

Marita's stories explore the timeless magic, wisdom and humour of folktales and myths from all over the globe. Her particular passion lies in combining Celtic traditions and the folklore of the Orkney Isles with tales from indigenous cultures of the world, to contribute towards mutual understanding and tolerance between all peoples.

Marita believes in the power of imagination and story to build bridges between all cultures, past and present, old and young, tragedy and comedy. She tells her stories with warmth and compassion, and enjoys leading interactive storytelling workshops for school children, and storytelling and philosophy workshops for adults.

Born in Germany in 1959, Marita grew up with her grandfather, a shepherd. His love of the natural world and of customs and traditions inspired her to tell her own tales since she was five years old. Before living, learning and telling stories in Orkney since 1990, she trained and worked as an organic tree nursery gardener in Germany and Norway, and researched the faerie mythology of the Celtic countries for a masters degree in cultural studies. A guest speaker at international science and philosophy festivals, Marita also integrates her stories in her lectures, as a subtle and entertaining way to communicate the emotional fabric of the human condition, our hopes, fears and dreams. She is the author of a German book on Celtic faeries as reflections of the human soul, and has initiated various storytelling events and projects in Orkney. She is secretary of the local Sunwheel Circle of Cultural Connections that includes a regular story club.

Marita's storytelling has complemented arts, astronomy and archaeology projects for children and adults, as well as her work as an accredited Orkney tourist guide and guide trainer. She has performed at Orkney's St Magnus, Tall Tales and Science Festivals, the Scottish International and the Skye & Lochalsh Storytelling Festivals, the 2004 'Coming Home' Pilgrimage of Saskatchewan First Nations to the Orkney Islands, and as a guest storyteller at various events in Scotland, Germany, Canada and Australia.
