John has spent over 25 years shepherding on the mountains of Scotland. His repertoire reflects his knowledge of the countryside and the stories of Scotland: its history and folklore, myths and legends, characters and heroes. He also tells ghost stories and his speciality is leading story-packed guided walks through the Trossachs.
As well as leading guided story-walks, he is happy to give talks and tell stories to schools, colleges, clubs and societies, and will consider working with a variety of age groups. He is also an after-dinner speaker and commentator at Highland Games all over Scotland.
John was born in Mumbles, South Wales. When he came to work in the Trossachs thirty years ago he moved into an area where the tradition of storytelling was still very much alive. His maternal grandfather had told him stories from as far back as he can remember and this stimulated his interest in tales from an early age. He has contributed to many radio and television programmes and in 2001 made a T.V. programme for the History Channel about Rob Roy MacGregor.
John's book, Red Sky at Night, describing life in the Scottish countryside was published in 1984 and won a Scottish Arts Council Book Award.
