Jane Mather

Jane loves telling stories, from traditional Scottish folk tales to simple fairy stories, and has experience telling stories to children and families in school and community settings and adult community groups.
Having spent much time in the past 20 years working to support people experiencing mental ill health and exclusion, Jane understands the important role of stories in bringing communities together.

With the birth of her twin boys in 2005 a new story began, Jane focused on many things important to her as a girl: exploring nature, learning the names of trees and wildflowers, the stories her Grandpa used to tell her of when he was a boy and her mother’s tales of faeries and magic. Lucky enough to live as a child in some beautiful wild places like Orkney and Caithness, where the smell of the sea and the song of the seals is home, she has a rich tapestry to draw upon in storytelling.

Jane began telling for a friendship project at her children’s nursery and things grew from there. She gained a forest school qualification and recently developed and ran nature kindergarten sessions for her children’s school, which encourage plenty of imaginative exploration and support the curriculum for excellence.

Currently Jane runs SEASONS, a wellbeing project in Edinburgh which facilitates a range of creative and therapeutic activities for people experiencing mental ill health, many activities draw inspiration from nature and stories are an organic part of this with a their capacity to encourage healing and meaningful human connection.

Jane’s other recent projects include facilitating woodland craft and story sessions for Carrick Knowe Primary, ‘Storytelling in the Woods’ a CPD session for nursery teachers at Edinburgh’s 2012 Nature Play conference, helping develop and facilitate an intergenerational story gathering project for Brigend Inspiring Growth called ‘Three Bridges’ and most recently story and nature craft sessions at the Big Tent 2012 Eco - festival at Falkland Centre for Stewardship.
