Jackie Carothers

Jackie tells all kinds of stories from all over the world, always making a point of bringing back new stories from wherever she goes. Her stories include myths, traditional tales (especially those with glimpses of another world) and comic tales, stories about Edinburgh and Scottish characters and the retelling of real life experiences. She uses interactive stories and songs to entice audiences to join in.

Jackie likes to tell stories to adults, mixed age groups and older people. She believes in the magic of stories not just to entertain but also to touch lives and promote well-being. As a member of the Edinburgh-based “Life Stories Group” for 6 years she has developed a particular expertise in storytelling with the over-50s, visiting libraries, church groups, day centres and care homes in most parts of Edinburgh and wider afield. For these sessions Jackie includes stories from real life to make people laugh and bring back memories and she is thrilled when people join in and tell their own stories. She likes to offer groups a choice of themes to match their interests or develop new themes for their special events.

Jackie was born in India, grew up in England, and worked in Nigeria, Germany and London before coming to Edinburgh in 1972 to train as a Social Worker where she has stayed ever since! She is an experienced group-worker and always found that the best part of her social work job was hearing the stories of people’s lives. Inspired by the master storytellers and teachers who have performed at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Jackie took up telling stories when she retired.

Jackie regularly performs at Edinburgh’s Guid Crack Club and Café Voices, belongs to BagaTelle Storytelling Group and enjoys getting together to tell stories with friends and other storytellers. She has helped set up several Life Stories Projects in different parts of Edinburgh by contacting groups of older people to inform them of the project and to arrange storytellers’ visits, believing that the combination of storytelling and reminiscence affirms the life-experiences of participants.
