Amanda Edmiston

Amanda loves stories which provide glimpses into the past, stories that look at our relationship with the environment and the natural world, stories that share the wisdom of people from around the world.

Amanda says ‘I grew up in a family of storytellers. My earliest memories are of stories from my parents’ and grandparents’ childhood, and their recollections of myths and fairy tales. My grandfather told me stories in his studio as he sculpted; my father told stories about the toys he made; my Mum has my rapt attention as she tells me stories to this day.’

A former student of herbal medicine and fascinated by history, Amanda writes, researches and retells stories and creates workshops which often contain insights into the world of plants and how we use she says ‘most stories contain plants!’

She works extensively in schools and nurseries, museums, woodlands and gardens, has spent two years as a storyteller with older people in care homes with the Living Voices project and for three years was the storyteller for the parent and toddler group at Glasgow’s Hidden Gardens. Amanda loves discovering new ways of bringing storytelling to life and has created successful grown up storytelling performance pieces and worked on a number of diverse projects: writing and retelling Sleeping Beauty on film for The Scottish Ballet, creating storytelling workshops in response to art exhibitions and acting as lead artist on long term community projects: Battlefield Story Spiral saw her creating a story garden with adults with learning difficulties and creating a book with children. Regularly collaborating with musicians and visual artists, Amanda’s interactive sessions incorporate multisensory objects and encourage creative involvement from participants, she has created bespoke sessions for The National Museum of Rural life, Edinburgh International Science festival, Chelsea Physic garden and The National Literacy Trust amongst others.
