John Knox House

Welcome to the oldest medieval building that sits on the Royal Mile today. Jump back and immerse yourself in the history of the building and much more.

– Hear the stories and the dramas that unfolded inside
– Learn about its famous inhabitants by walking in their footsteps
– Learn how intruders were caught and fooled with the traps and tricks around the house
– Hunt down the devil hiding in the ceiling
– Experience the portrait puzzles and pit your wits against them

Dating back to 1470, this building is known to have been linked to the Scottish Reformation which started the Scottish civil war and more famously, the abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots.

John Knox only stayed in the house for a short period up until his death in the mid to late-1500s. It wasn’t until the 1840s when the building was due to be flattened that his association with the house saved it from destruction.

Written Guides are available at the museum. These are offered in the reception area of the building. We recommend you use the guide as you go along as it discusses important and interesting parts of the house that you may otherwise miss. Tours are also available.
