A bit sick of Christmas? Come indulge your dark side with a modern dramatisation of RL Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Real life or nightmare? Dark or light? And are these guys separate or just two faces of the same story?
Writer Donald Smith has reworked Stevenson's masterpiece into Jekyll and Hyde: A Specimen by relocating the action to present day Edinburgh, with Jekyll taking the guise of a medical student conducting research on the human brain in his New Town home’s private lab, with some shady funders…
Originally staged in 2008 as part of Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature’s One Book, One City Campaign, Rough Cut Robin Productions brings the tale back for Christmas 2017, with the themes of this literary classic still relevant, especially during the demands and expectations of the festive season! Two actors, Robbie Gordon and Gavin Paul, play all the parts in a rich reflection of the divided selves which haunts the text as Paul explains:
‘After the success of Kidnapped: When Kilts Were Banned at RLS Day 2016 it was always my intention to bring back Jekyll and Hyde: A Specimen. I had a great time working on this show originally and the response was fantastic. Hopefully we can achieve this again for 2017 and offer an alternative to the many pantos that fill the calendar at this time of year!
‘There are so many adaptations of this Stevenson Classic, but we wanted to stay true to the story. Although moving the action to a modern-day Edinburgh setting with 2 actors who mix all the essential characters between them and present the story to the audience in a fun and engaging way, it still retains all its classic elements.
‘As well as being a great story, it is a very rewarding one to work on that moves along at a pace to keep all the action flowing… so do pop down to find out what happens…!’
‘cleverly written and dynamically performed’ (Scotsman)
