(Claudia Llosa, 2009, Peru)
A magical-realist fable about community healing after political atrocities, Claudia Llosa’s 2009 Golden Bear winner is an audacious testament to female survival full of song, black humour and luminous imagery. Fausta is one of a generation of young women who have received the ‘milk of sorrow’ from their mother’s breast; the crippling feelings of terror and desperation after two decades of brutal Peruvian civil war, rape and persecution. Nursing her mother on her death-bed, Fausta must confront the overwhelming feelings inherited from her mother’s generation and decide for herself whether she is a victim or a survivor.
